Submission Requirements

"It makes a difference where you send your pathology specimens."

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Please fill out the request form completely to include the patient's full name, sex, age, date of birth, social security number, date specimen obtained, location of biopsy, submitting doctor/clinic, clinical information including diagnoses and demographic/billing information.

LABELING:
All specimen containers should be labeled with the patient's name, date collected and identity/location of tissue.
(NOTE: SPECIMENS OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS ON THE SAME PATIENT MUST BE PLACED IN SEPARATE CONTAINERS.) Slides should be labeled with the patient's name.

TISSUE BIOPSIES:
Tissue biopsies should be placed in 10% buffered formalin for routine histologic studies. The formalin volume should be at least 5 times the volume of the tissue.

CURETTINGS - Endocervical and endometrial curettings may be placed on Telfa pads to absorb blood. This makes it easier to recover all of the tissue fragments for processing.

FROZEN SECTION - Biopsies for frozen section should be delivered FRESH to the laboratory immediately for examination by the pathologist. Please designate margins of resection if needed by ink or sutures. Call to schedule in advance.

LYMPHOMAS:
Lymph node and other tissue specimens with clinical suspicion for lymphoma should be delivered FRESH to the laboratory on saline soaked Telfa, as soon as possible. These specimens should NOT be submitted in formalin. Special fixation and processing of fresh tissue for lymphocyte marker analysis are required for the diagnosis of lymphoma.

BONE MARROWS:
Submit bone marrow biopsy and aspirate clot in B5 for optimal fixation. Touch preps of the biopsy and aspirate smears should be submitted fresh, unstained in a separate plasic bag from the B5. B5 fumes will alter staining of touch preps and smears and must be kept separate. To maximize clinical pathologic correlation, include a recent peripheral blood smear and CBC data or an EDTA tube of peripheral blood. If cytometric flow studies or cytogenetics are desired, send additional aspirate in lithium heparin (green top tube).

SPECIAL HANDLING:
Call the laboratory for special handling instructions on skin biopsies for immunoflourescence, kidney, muscle or nerve biopsies.
